Why AppHipMom loves it: Young children can compose and learn music as they play
There’s no shortage of music apps for children but what makes the Music4Kids app unique is that it doesn’t play down to children. The app at first glance is aesthetically pleasing to kids ages 4+ with its bright playful colours and use of cute animals to grab kid’s attention. But don’t be fooled, the app has so much more to offer.
Children can create their own music by simply tapping the screen. Depending where on the clef they tap, the corresponding note will appear. Kids can then move the note up and down the clef and see and hear the note as it changes tone. Sharps and flats are even introduced. They can continue in this fashion to create their very own masterpiece. All tunes can be saved for future playback.
There are also musical recognition games, with 140 challenges included by the composer. The ear test challenges brought me back to when I was 8 years old on exam day at the Royal Conservatory of Music. Listen to the notes and repeat. Sounds simple, right? Well, maybe for you, but to this day, ear tests are still not my cup of tea.
The musical vocabulary presented is interestingly British versus American. You won’t see the terms whole note, half note here but rather its British equivalents semibreve and minim throughout. Love that the app is available in 11 languages including French, Spanish, Italian and Chinese.
If you’re looking for a serious yet fun, creative music app for your kids, you must consider Music4Kids.
