Mapquest 4 Mobile
Find it: Apple App Store, Android Market, Blackberry App World
Why AppHipMom loves it: I can drive & listen to directions at the same time
My Garmin GPS unit is on its last legs but thanks to Mapquest 4 Mobile I hardly miss it. The app provides something that the iPhone is lacking–spoken turn by turn voice directions. The Maps feature on the iPhone is useful, but without spoken directions, what good is it while I’m driving?
Like all GPS units, Mapquest can also show nearby restaurants, hotels, gas stations, etc. Traffic along your route will be highlighted in either green, yellow or red. What’s absolutely great about this free app is that it provides spoken street names. I tried another free navigational app but it did not have spoken street names and that was the end of that app. Mapquest 4 Mobile may not have all the fancy bells and whistles of their GPS counterparts, but it’s a great simple no frills alternative if all you need is to get from point A to point B.
I do hope that they will fix a few things with their next update. First, I don’t like that Mapquest doesn’t tell me which side of the street my destination is on. Instead of “Now arriving at 123 Main Street”, I would love to hear “Arriving at 123 Main Street on your left”. This was a feature on Garmin that I miss. Sure I can look at numbers on the buildings, but let’s face it, that’s a real distraction (especially when some don’t have numbers!). The second issue is that it’s a real (iPhone) battery drainer. For long hauls, a car battery charger is an absolute must.
Despite these issues, I still love this free app and I think you will too.
