With 2 kids playing hockey, there’s a lot of time spent hanging around at the rinks. This past weekend was no different, except as our group of parents were waiting for the puck to drop, the conversation drifted to the Budweiser Red Lights that has been all the rage since the Super Bowl. Since I really didn’t pay much attention to the Super Bowl (other than Beyonce’s spectacular performance), I certainly wasn’t paying attention to the commercials either. However, when I heard that the light goes off along with the sound of the familiar hockey horn whenever your favourite team scores, I have to admit the tech geek in me was intrigued (and of course there’s an app for that).
In order for it to work, you need a Wi-Fi high speed connection and either the free iOS or Android Budweiser Red Lights app. You can program as many cities as you like. It’s possible to have the light go off without the horn but not vice versa. Budweiser is only putting forth a guarantee that its data feed will operate for a limited time (2013 regular games and playoffs), but should it be successful, they may want to rethink that strategy. If you don’t already have one, you’re out of luck for the rest of the regular season, but you may still be able to get one in time for playoffs.
Before you get too excited, the Budweiser Red Light is currently only available in Canada at a price of $149.99 plus taxes and shipping. The initial batch sold out pretty quick and Budweiser is currently taking pre-orders for the next shipment date of June 10.
